Personality: Laura Palmer's personality varies from person to person. And from day to night.

Daytime Laura is the sweetheart of Twin Peaks. She's a loving daughter who is very close to her parents. She's the Homecoming Queen and she's dating the football star. She helps with Meals on Wheels and tutors a local woman in English. She's sweet to everyone, friendly without reservations, and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.

Her best friend is Donna Hayward, a good girl who encourages Laura's better instincts. Laura is fiercely protective of Donna, not wanting to let her into Nighttime Laura's world. The one occasion Donna does enter that world, Laura is enraged to see Donna being taken advantage of and comes screaming to her defense. When Donna wakes up the next day after her experience, she asks Laura why she behaves the way she does. Laura has no answers for her best friend.

Daytime Laura also befriends Harold Smith, a shut-in on her Meals on Wheels route. It's with Harold that we see the closest thing to an amalgamation of Daytime and Nighttime Laura. She trusts Harold with the truth of her life, including the sexual assault Laura has endured since she was twelve. She's a combination of innocent and seductive with him, letting him into her internal life, yet keeping him at a sexual distance. A show of how much she trusts Harold is that she's willing to give him her personal diary in which she wrote the pure, unvarnished truth about her actions and how she felt about them.

Nighttime Laura smokes, drinks, lies to her parents and sneaks out of the house all the time, cheats on her boyfriend with not just one boy but with multiple partners, helps with selling drugs, and participates in orgies with strangers. Her personality completely shifts from the sweetness of Daytime Laura to a harder, more cynical and jaded personality with a very unhealthy approach to sex.

Nighttime Laura associates with Jacques Renault, a pimp and sexual libertine. Laura allowed Jacques to pimp her out. However, Laura had contempt for the men who she was pimped out to, seeing them only as a source of money for cocaine and a brief sexual release. She also participated in orgies at Jacques' cabin. Laura found the orgies empowering due to the sexual release she could give to the participants. She also felt superior to the men participating in the orgies as she could fulfill their fantasies and make them submissive to her.

One thing that remains constant in both Daytime and Nighttime Laura is that she's got a cocaine habit. It's presented as a coping mechanism for the trauma she's undergone in life. She tries giving up cocaine multiple times, but ultimately the strain of being brutalized by BOB leads to Laura leaning even more heavily on cocaine in an attempt to dull her emotions. Being without a reliable source of cocaine will be a strain on her, at least at first.

Another constant for Laura is a complicated attitude towards sex. She started having sexual thoughts and fantasies at a very young age and was both thrilled and disturbed by them. She felt sure that "good" girls didn't think about sex the way she did at the age she did (twelve), but at the same time she was attracted to the darker aspects of sex including bondage, anonymous sex, and orgies. Laura is willing to sell her body for money, yet she remains convinced that good girls don't have sexual fantasies and urges. But she plays the part of the good girl without a hitch.

This confusion about sex isn't helped by the fact that Laura has been raped on a regular basis since she was twelve by an entity Laura knows as BOB. Laura is severely traumatized by her experiences with BOB. She keeps it a secret from her best friend, Donna, because she doesn't want to ruin the Laura in Donna's mind who is friends with Donna. She feels comfortable talking about it with Harold because he's a shut-in who won't tell anyone.

She's even more traumatized at the revelation that BOB had possessed her father's body to rape and torment her. When she first suspects, she cries and begs for it to not be true because she loves her father dearly and can't bear the thought that he'd be doing such a thing to her all those years. When she finds out the truth and that BOB has indeed been using her father's body to rape her, she rebuffs her father coldly and firmly, telling him to stay away from her. She's not frightened as much as she is angry at the revelation.

What makes matters even worse is the revelation that BOB plans to take over Laura's body next. Laura responds to this revelation with a great deal of inner strength, refusing to be BOB's victim in this matter.

At the same time as she's being brutalized by a spirit wearing her father's body, Laura maintains a faith in angels. She has a picture in her room of an angel serving children that she frequently looks at and takes comfort in. She seems to see the angel as proof of her innocence, despite all of the things that she's done and have had done to her. When the angel disappears from the painting, Laura is deeply shaken. She sees it as proof that she is so corrupted, not even the angels can save her or have anything to do with her. It distresses her greatly.

The problem with Laura is that no one really knows her. Donna knows the supportive and loving friend. Bobby (her boyfriend) knows the Laura who's addicted to cocaine but still puts on the face of Twin Peaks' sweetheart. Jacques knows the party girl Laura, always ready for a good time (and the good time consists mainly of sex). Her parents know the sweetheart, the good daughter. BOB knows the victim of his assaults and ultimately, the determined young woman who'd rather die than let herself be possessed by him.

Inventory: Nothing except the white silk corset and panties with pantyhose she wore when she died. All will be bloodstained. There is also a ring given to her just prior to her death at the hands of her father. It prevents death at the hands of a demon and demonic possession.

Abilities: Sex. Laura knows sex, knows she's good at it, and knows that people want it. Laura is also a very good reader of people and their motivations and can adapt herself to fit the kind of person they'd want her to be.

Flaws: Laura has plenty of flaws. She lies on a regular basis even to (perhaps especially to) the people she loves and trusts the most, she uses sex for a power trip, she uses cocaine to numb herself from her emotions, she uses people to fulfill her own needs and desires. She believes herself to be unworthy of anything good or pure and she's debased herself because of that belief.
